What is Omega Phi Alpha?
Omega Phi Alpha (OPA) is a national service sorority that was founded nationally in 1967. The sisters of OPA are committed to the three cardinal principles of the sorority: friendship, leadership, and service. The sisters spend thousands of hours each year actively involved in serving others. The service aspect of the sorority, in which it is centered around, is what sets it apart from social sororities. Although the primary aspect of OPA is service, they hold several fellowships throughout the academic school year, as well.
Omega Phi Alpha is a dry sorority, which means that sisters and pledges are not permitted to consume alcohol at any of the sorority events and functions.
The Omicron chapter of OPA has very diverse members and strongly encourages diversity.
Some frequently asked questions about Omega Phi Alpha:
Who can join Omega Phi Alpha?
Any student at Auburn University who is in good academic standing may become a pledge of Omega Phi Alpha. Once initiated, each semester active sisters must meet their requirements through chapter-sponsored projects, events, as well as various other activities that are voted on by the chapter.
What happens during the pledge period?
The pledge period is a time where pledges get to know the active sisters and learn more about Omega Phi Alpha. It is also a time for pledges to show enthusiasm towards the sorority as well as their understanding and commitment to upholding the principles. Pledges elect their own officers, plan service projects and fundraisers, are paired with a big sister, and get a better feel for the sisterhood present in Omicron Chapter. Pledging takes time, commitment, and work, but the rewards are many, and the memories made will last a life time.
What is the difference between Omega Phi Alpha and the other sororities at AU?
Omega Phi Alpha is a service sorority, while AU’s other sororities are social sororities. OPA believes in many of the same things and share many similarities - big and little sisters, social outings, retreats, and formals - but OPA’s constant commitment to service is what sets it apart. Rather than several large projects per year, Omega Phi Alpha sisters participate in an ongoing program of service that benefits many different organizations, causes, and areas. Members of other sororities and organizations are always welcome to rush Omega Phi Alpha.
How can I join Omega Phi Alpha?
Omega Phi Alpha typically holds rush during both fall and spring semesters each year. During rush, students interested in the sorority can learn more about OPA and what it is like to be a member, meet the sisters, as well as play games, mingle with other interested students, and generally have fun. Rush is free and open to everybody!
Our next rush will take place in September 1-3, 2009. Please contact our membership director, Jessica McAnnaly-Linz, or our president, Morgan Byrd, for more information about Omega Phi Alpha. We look forward to hearing from you and look forward to seeing you at rush!
