Delta Delta Delta was founded on November 27th in 1888 at Boston University. Sarah Ida Shaw suggested to her friend Eleanor Dorcas Pond, "Let us found a society that shall be kind alike to all and think more of a girl's inner self and character than of her personal appearance." Two other women, Florence Isabelle Stewart and Isabel Morgan Breed joined the two in their dream, and thus, the first Tri Delta Chapter was formed.
The Phi Theta chapter of Delta Delta Delta was founded in the spring of 1954 with thirteen charter members led by Adelaie Gillespie of the University of Alabama. Mary Eleanor Ashmore Dillion was elected as the first president, and until the chapter room was completed, meetings were held in a dorm room. They participated in Fall Recruitment for the first time in 1954 and pledged twenty six girls. Recently, in 2004, the pledge class of 1954 celebrated the 50th anniversary of their pledge ship and the founding of the Phi Theta Chapter by having a tea and a dinner here in Auburn.
