Legislative Attempts at Reform

Below are chronicled the attempts by our state legislature to enact constitutional reform! Please get involved and contact the necessary legislators! I will try to keep this section as up to date as possible.

Senate Bill 198

(view the bill on PDF)

Sponsor: Senator Ted Little

What the bill says: This bill essentially sets out a procedure for a constitutional convention. First, the voters of Alabama would vote in a special election on whether or not to have a constitutional convention. If a majority voted that one should be convened, delegates from each State House district would be elected. These delegates would have from January 1, 2007, to the 2008 primary elections to come up with a new constitution. During the 2008 primary elections, voters would choose whether or not to ratify this constitution. If they did accept it, the new constitution would become active on January 1, 2009.

Current status: This bill died in committee when the regular session of the Alabama legislature ended in May 2005.
