Chapter History
The history of the Talons Chapter of Cardinal key is made of both the
local Talons Junior Honor Society and the Cardinal Key National Honor Society.
In 1932, Cardinal Key, one of the first national honor societies for women,
founded a chapter at Auburn. The Auburn chapter continues until 1952 when it
merged with the Sphinx Chapter or Mortar Board. From 1952 until 1982, there was
no junior honor society at Auburn. During the spring of 1982, Dr. Joseph
Kicklighter and seven seniors worked to develop one. As a result of their work,
talons was born. Dr. pat Barnes, former Vice President of Student Affairs,
served along with Dr. Kicklighter as co-advisor from 1997-1994. Wendy Huguley,
served as co-advisor from 1997-1998, and was succeeded by Jamie Wingfield, who
served from 1998 to 2001. Wendy Huguley returned in the fall of 2001 as
co-advisor.
Talons received a permanent chapter on February 23, 1984.
Throughout the years, Talons became a vital part of Auburn. This group also
looked for ways of becoming part of a national organization. in the spring of
1987, Dr. Kicklighter informed the new 1987-1988 members of a national
organization for juniors called Cardinal Key. Those member voted to join
Cardinal key as the Talons Chapter. Preparations for the change took place
throughout the spring and fall of 1987. On November 22, 1987 the Talons Chapter
of Cardinal Key was installed by the National Director, Edit Borg, who then
initiated the Talons members in Cardinal Key National Honor Society.
