Auburn's first organization dedicated to the advancement of plant sciences. Established in 1995, the ABS strives to educate both the Auburn student body as well as the academic community about the importance of botany in everyday life. The ABS has many professional scientist, graduate and undergraduate students, and everyday Alabama citizens on it's membership list. With the overwhelming support the ABS has recieved over the past few months we have been able to schedule numerous lectures and field trips for the upcoming academic year.
It is important to understand plants, in part because they make all other life on earth possible. Try to trace any food chain back any you will see that they all return to a common provider, PLANTS! With this in mind can you afford not to know more about plants? The floristic diversity of Alabama allows the ABS to experience many botanical wonders that are found in no other place in the world. Alabama supports a myriad of different plant habitats. One n particular that is in need of management are the Southeast's picture plant bogs. Picture plants are carnivorous plants that produce tube shaped leaves that capture insects. These richly diverse picture plant habitats are extemely important to the botanical makeup of the world's biota. An on-going project that the ABS is initiating is a management plan to help maintain the threatened areas. With your help we can accomplish our goal of saving one of Alabama's vanishing ecosystems. So what are you waiting for? The Auburn Botanical Society it's where YOU should be!
