Old Pros Get a Lesson

University Bass club member Clay Messer wins the Lake Mitchell/Lowrance qualifying tournament.  Clay’s 15.18 lbs catch barely edged out Robert Behrle’s 15.17 lbs weight.  The Auburn University Senior fished ten foot ledges on the lower end of the main lake.  Clay said he fished the same ledges in practice without catching a fish, but he knew fish should be there.  So with a Net Bait, Bama Bug colored trick worm fished on a Davis Bait Shaky head and a lot of confidence, he returned to those ledges and landed four fish—one of which weighed 8.84 lbs.!  That was his biggest fish ever and the Big Fish of the Lowrance tournament.

Clay’s weight also anchored the University Bass Club’s winning team weight of 50.67 lbs.  Along with his other team members, Anthony Goggins, Jeremy Headley, Adam Murphree, Sam Rochell and Morgan French, they won over the Bluff City Bassmasters by more than eight pounds and third place team Central Alabama Bassmasters, who had 42.23 lbs.

It was a good payday for the University anglers.  Clay Messer won $1,200 for 1st Place, $575 for Big Fish and another $125 for winning team.  Anthony Goggins finished 5th taking home $500 and team money.

Coosa River angler Robert Behrle fished a crank bait and swam a jig to finish just one hundredth of a pound out of 1st Place.

Rick Hoefle, Bluff City team member, fished crank baits and Carolina rigged lizards on main river points and ledges.  He caught five fish that weighed 14.81 lbs and finished in 3rd Place.

Everyone thought the low water caused by drought conditions would be “The Story” of this tournament.  While it did cause problems, it was the domination by the younger anglers that opened some eyes and brought some smiles to the crowd.
