What to do in Auburn
posted June 17, 2013
[Say it with me now] WAR EAGLE! So we've been through several facets of Auburn and what it means to be an Auburn man or woman. But I'm sure you're dying, metaphorically of course, to learn more! Last week was all about getting involved on campus. You may ask, "What if I've seen everything and been to every club on campus?" I would first question your trustworthiness because there are over 375 on campus organizations, but I would still list several things out of the gamut of places to go in the greater Auburn Opelika area. For instance...
There are PLENTY of places to spend time outdoors. Chewacla state park is one of them. This beautiful refuge is only a 10 minute drive from campus, but it seems as if you're a world away. Waterfalls, hiking and biking trails, and a 26-acre lake perfect for you fishermen and women make Chewacla an irresistible destination for the outdoor-oriented. There are also several Auburn City parks complete with running tails, playing fields, and special events year-round. Not to mention they're prime hammocking locations.
Like to shop? Well you may have to learn how NOT to shop because you're going to be broke in college. However, with the mall in Opelika, and Tigertown a quick 15 minutes away, there's always a place to go to find that picture that seems to be missing from your already plastered dorm room wall or yet another lamp to light your not so spacious studio apartment. Sensible or not, your shopping needs will surely be quenched.
How about those of you who eat? Oh yeah, EVERYONE. If you're a barbeque fan there's Byron's, Price's, Country's, Moe's and Mike & Ed's barbeque houses. And that's just to name a few right off campus. Need somewhere for date night? Downtown Opelika is just 20 minutes away but has some Auburn favorites like Ma-Fia's, an authentic Italian restaurant, and Irish Bread Pub, serving some of Ireland's best dishes. Both of these are in trendy downtown Opelika right by the railroad. Closer to campus we have Amsterdam's and Hamilton's for those of you willing to spend an extra buck or two on that special someone.
So you'll need coffee in college. Not even a question. Starbucks on campus is certainly a great choice, but there's also Toomer's coffee and the brand new Dunkin Donuts on South College Street as well as Gnu's Coffee House in the back of a quaint bookstore on Gay Street. And of course my personal favorite: The Overall Company. Situated on 10th Street in downtown Opelika, this chic warehouse coffee shop draws students to Opelika like a fresh spring flower to a hive of bees. With hand made, freshly brewed coffees and lattes, gourmet popsicles, and house made pastries and baked goods you can't go wrong with this place. The atmosphere is cool as well with rustic style furniture, all for sale, and an art gallery upstairs. The Overall Company also host concerts and events. Needless to say, check them out. Oh I almost forgot that after less than one year of operation, they've already expanded to accommodate their growing gourmet popsicle sales!
For me the best thing I got involved in off campus was my church. I made the majority of my closest friends at church and was able to have a home away from home with the many families there as well. Attending church in college has put a new meaning on faith and what it means to live for Christ. So, when you get here you should check some of the local churches out! Most of them have awesome on campus groups to get involved in as well.
I don't believe I've exhausted all the things to do in the Auburn Opelika area, but I do believe your eyes are probably tired from reading this screen. So we can just end it at that, and you can find all new treasures around town when you get here in the fall! Thanks to all you loyal readers. We get more exited every day to meet all of you in the fall!
With much anticipation,
Matthew and the 2013 Rat Leaders
