Raison d'etre

A Chinese lady is being harassed in a small town store, as she tries in vain to communicate with its owner. An Indian student is being ridiculed for his traditional dressing style and thick accent. And a bearded Muslim gentleman is being branded as a terrorist. These are just some of the contemporary social concerns facing Asian Americans in the post 9/11 era, wherein discrimination is condoned and hatred is justified. The Auburn Asian Association seeks to touch the lives of the afflicted, by addressing all issues falling under the discriminatory umbrella. And by promoting the ideals of social justice, egalitarianism and fair treatment, it strives to fashion a better tomorrow- one in which cultural and religious differences are respected and admired, rather than frowned upon.

Ever since its inception, the organization has focused on promoting public awareness of Asian American culture and ethnicity at Auburn University, and its environs. It has rapidly assumed a commanding posture on campus, with a purposeful and highly diverse manifesto. Hosting numerous cultural bonanzas, it attempts to meld the highly rich Asian heritage into mainstream American culture. Several workshops and seminars have been conducted to aid professional development and leadership. It serves as a platform for debating common social ills and prejudices, and in doing so, advances the cause of those who are suppressed and unheard. Special lecturers and performers are also invited for cross-fertilization of ideas and beliefs, and for the fostering of a strong cultural community. By the attendance and ensuing feedback, the general perception is that these events have provoked much thought and discussion over many of the common ills in our society. General body meetings are held regularly to clinically examine progress. Of admirable note is the intent which is shown when volunteers are required for charity and relief events. Needless to say, they hope to march on in the same vein.

The original target audience was first generation Asian Americans, but the spirit and ethos of its members has molded the organization into a potent force encompassing all in its wake. As the movement matures, with every academic semester, the coming years will see a pivotal role being played by the Auburn Asian Association, towards the eradication of racism, stereotypes and ethnic discrimination.
