Article I. Name of the Organization
The name of this
organization will be the Auburn Mathematics Education Society, abbreviated
A.M.E.S.
Article II.
Purpose
The purpose of
the Auburn Mathematics Education Society is to offer professional
development to all students at Auburn University who are interested in
mathematics education and to provide services to the local mathematics
education community.
Article
III. Membership
Section 1. All
regularly enrolled students, faculty, and staff at Auburn University who are
interested in mathematics education for any grade level are eligible for
membership.
Section 2.
Membership in another organization is not a prerequisite for membership in
the Auburn Mathematics Education Society and membership is open to all
persons without regard to race, color, gender, creed, or national origin.
Article IV:
Officers
Section 1.
Elected officers will include the President, Vice President/president-elect,
Secretary, Treasurer, and a National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
(N.C.T.M.) Representative. The term of office shall be for one – two
years. Elections will be held annually no later than the last business
meeting of Spring Semester.
Section 2.
Appointed Officers will include the Program Chair, Membership Chair, Service
Chair, Social Chair, Webmaster, and a College of Education Student Council
Representative. Appointments will be made as needed at the beginning of
each semester.
Section 3. The
Executive committee shall consist of both elected and appointed officers.
Section 4. In
the case of the vacancy of the presidency, the Vice President shall reside
as President. All other vacancies shall be filled by appointment from the
President, pending approval of the Executive committee.
Article V. Duties of Executive Board
Section 1. The
President shall preside at meetings and be aware of all committee and
officer business. He or she must also be a member of N.C.T.M., have
continual access to email, and file an annual report for A.M.E.S. with
N.C.T.M.
Section 2. The
Vice President shall preside at meetings in absence of President, oversee
all committees, and maintain the constitution.
Section 3. The
Secretary shall be responsible for taking and preparing minutes for A.M.E.S.
meetings, for keeping accurate record of attendance, and for maintaining an
accurate and updated address and e-mail list of members.
Section 4. The
Treasurer shall be responsible for financial concerns, budget concerns, and
fundraising. He or she shall be responsible for setting membership dues and
for paying N.C.T.M. annual dues. The amount of the dues is listed in the
by-laws.
Section 5. The
N.C.T.M. representative shall keep N.C.T.M. updated of officer changes,
membership information (including names, addresses, and email addresses),
and other A.M.E.S. news. He or she shall be responsible for informing
A.M.E.S. of N.C.T.M. news, events, and resources. He or she must also be a
member of N.C.T.M. and have continual access to email.
Article VI. Duties of Appointed Officers
Section 1. The
Program Chair shall be responsible for coordinating professional development
opportunities.
Section 2. The
Membership Chair shall be responsible for recruiting new members and
planning for affiliate and N.C.T.M. membership development
Section 3. The
Service Chair shall be responsible for maintaining active service projects
throughout the year, keeping a record of member participation.
Section 4. The
Social Chair shall be responsible for organizing and maintaining
communication between upper and lower classmen.
Section 5. The
Webmaster shall be responsible for creating and maintaining the A.M.E.S.
website, listserv, and any other technologies used by A.M.E.S..
Section 6. The
College of Education Student Council Representative shall be responsible for
attending the College of Education Student Council meetings and informing
A.M.E.S. members about activities within the college.
Article VII.
Advisors
Advisors must be
full time employees of Auburn University and members of the National Council
of Teachers of Mathematics.
Article
VIII. Meetings
Section 1.
Regular Business meetings will be held monthly. During these meetings
professional development related to mathematics education will be provided
for the membership.
Section 2.
Executive committee meetings will be held at least semimonthly.
Section 3. Two
unexcused absences per semester for all A.M.E.S. meetings shall be allowed
for the Executive committee before termination. To maintain active status,
each member of A.M.E.S. must attend at least one A.M.E.S. function per
month.
Section 4. The
impeachment of an officer can only occur when he/she has not fulfilled
his/her duties or if he/she is not in good standing with Auburn University.
Otherwise a two-thirds vote of members present at a business meeting is
required for impeachment.
Article
IX. Affiliations
The Auburn
Mathematics Education Society intends to become and maintain student
affiliation with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the
Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the East Alabama Council of
Teachers of Mathematics.
Article X.
Parliamentary Authority
All meetings
will be conducted according to Robert’s Rules of Order.
Article XI.
Amendments
Amendments may
be made to this constitution pending a three-fourths vote of members present
at a meeting pre-established for the purpose of changing the current
constitution. Members shall have at least thirty days to review the
proposed amendments.
Article XII.
Dissolution Clause
If at any time
the Auburn Mathematics Education Society ceases to carry out the purposes as
herein stated, all assets and property held by it, whether in trust or to
otherwise, shall, after payment of liabilities, be paid over to an
organization selected by the final executive committee. Such an
organization must have similar purposes, and all assets and property shall
be used exclusively for charitable and educational programs.
