The pastor from Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California and author of the best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life ignited gay activist groups’ ire after he was chosen to perform the invocation at President-Elect Obama’s Inauguration. These organizations point out Warren’s discriminatory views regarding the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities, which can be gleaned from several videos, interviews, and statements from the pastor. They propose that if a racist would be an inappropriate choice for an invocation pastor, then a heterosexist should be as well. In reply, the Obama Team has cited a need to bridge the divide between people who hold differing viewpoints and discussed contributions Warren has made towards progressing AIDS-preventative work. But the exact nature of these programs has been largely unknown, with only vague references about them on Warren’s websites. The Daily Beast investigates.
