Before coming to Auburn, I was eager to find a new environment where I would be challenged to become physically fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Once I arrived in Auburn, I quickly realized how easily I became distracted from this goal due to days filled with classes and meetings. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle might seem easy to some Auburn students, research has shown that children between the ages of six to nineteen find it more difficult to eat healthily. A tremendous number of children are overweight simply because they do not know how to make healthy food choices and do not exercise.
With Auburn being the university that it is, we can make a difference in the lives of students and children in the Auburn area by participating in the “Just Run” program. “Just Run” is a non-profit organization who specializes in encouraging kids to be healthy by making healthier food choices. As Miss Auburn, I am going to host a spring run raising money for the “Just Run” program. This run will benefit the Auburn area by raising awareness for the importance of physical activity in students and children. Beginning health awareness at an early age, as proven through the “Just Run” program, allows children to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles. By discovering my own health program, I have become an active runner and healthy eater. Due to this healthy lifestyle, I can now not only live longer but live stronger. Because of the “Just Run” program, we can help young kids right here in Lee County by providing them with better education in their schools and encouraging them to be physically active.
Auburn provides great opportunities for us as students to be healthy, whether you are an active runner or love sports. There is always something for everyone. Our intramural programs are exceptional. On Auburn’s campus, over 60% of students are involved in intramurals. With the building of the new student recreational and wellness center, we will have many new amenities for us to stay healthy.
As an Auburn family, we can change the way young children as well as students like us realize the importance of a healthy body. We have so much life left to live and so much time to make a difference in these children’s lives. Auburn University is an exceptional university where we can accomplish anything. We are growing everyday as an Auburn family, and with your help, Auburn can help children live longer and live stronger!
