Training Center

In response to the recognized shortage of high quality detection dogs and detection team training, as well as to facilitate technology transfer from the Canine and Detection Research Institute to the operational canine detection community, Auburn University established the Canine Detection Training Center (CDTC). The Center offers state of the art instruction in all facets of canine detection operations and a performance based selective breeding program of detector dogs. Scientific understanding, quality, and responsiveness to customer needs are our guiding principles

TRAINING CENTER SERVICES:

Canine team (dog & handler) training for explosive and drug detection
Breeding/acquisition and pre-training of detector dogs
     Handler instruction
Detection team evaluation and refresher training
Courses customized to specific operational missions
Development of canine detection capabilities for special substances
     Canine program supervisor/management seminars
     Program evaluation and consultation

The combination of internationally recognized canine training program expertise, professional instructors, the R & D capabilities of the Canine and Detection Research Institute and support provided by the Veterinary Sports Medicine Program of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine makes the CDTC a truly state of the art provider of complete canine detection services.

The CDTC breeding program is one of three U. S. cooperative satellites of the highly successful Australian Customs Service Detector Dog Breeding Program. The aim of the cooperative detector dog program is to selectively breed Labrador Retrievers based on working performance and reduction of the incidence of career limiting health conditions to provide a much needed resource of high quality detection dogs. Perhaps even more importantly, puppies in the program are raised by volunteer families that have been trained to provide the pups with experiences that will foster their working potential and character as a good canine citizen.

LOCATION:

The CDTC is located at McClellan, AL, a former U. S. Army Post adjacent to Anniston, AL, which is in the foothills of the Appalachians. The infrastructure, location, and logistical partners at McClellan are ideal for the Center's mission. Auburn has a 99-year lease of several buildings, and over 250 acres of land on the recently closed Army base. These buildings include the previous military veterinary clinic as well as a modern 24,000 square foot instructional building. In addition, the University has constructed a state-of-the-art forty run kennel and breeding complex. McClellan contains multiple firing ranges, a driving course, air strip, and multiple warehouses, buildings, and an enormous number of personnel housing typical of a large military training facility.

McClellan is also home to the Office of Justice Programs' Center for Domestic Preparedness (CPD), and the U.S. Public Health Services, Noble Training Hospital, both of which train early-responders to deal with chemical, biological, and other potential mass casualty events. These training programs, coupled with the ample infrastructure, as well as a large National Guard presence make McClellan an ideal integrated national security / homeland defense training site.
