SH! Be Quiet
1. Rational: The digraphs are hard for students to learn because digraphs
make the letters say something different from what the student learned.
For example, s says /s/, and h says /h/, but when you put them together
they say /sh/. I am teaching this lesson because it will help the
students learn to recognize the /sh/ when reading. In this lesson,
the students will learn what letters make the /sh/ sound and what sound
sh makes. It is important the students accomplish the goals of the
lesson because there are many words containing the digraph sh and while
reading they will encounter such words. This will help them read
better.
2. Materials: Elkonin letter boxes, letter manipulatives (sh- taped
together,c,a,f,i,t,u,w,n,e,p)
Chant Sh! Sh! Stop that Noise
Book Shadow translated and illustrated by Marcia Brown from the
French of Blaise Cendrars. Published in New York by Scribners.c.1982.
Worksheet used for assessment
3. Procedure: TODAY WE ARE GOING TO LEARN THE /SH/ SOUND.
WHEN YOU PUT S AND H TOGETHER, THEY SAY /SH/. /SH/ IS LIKE THE QUIET
SOUND, LIKE WHEN I TELL YOU TO “SH! BE QUIET!.” NOW WE ARE GOING
TO DO A CHANT CALLED “SH! SH! STOP THAT NOISE” Do the chant.
NOE WE ARE GOING TO DO THE LETTERBOX LESSON. GET OUT YOUR
BOXES AND THE LETTERS: SH (TAPED TOGETHER), C,A,F,I,U,T,W,N,E,P.
I WILL DO THE FIRST ONE TO SHOW YOU WHAT TO DO AND THEN YOU WILL DO THE
REST OF THE WORDS. REMEMBER, WHEN YOU DO THE LETTERBOXES YOU NEED
TO POUT EACH SOUND IN A DIFFERENT BOX. WE ARE GOING TO USE THREE
BOXES. WE ARE GOING TO SPELL WISH.
/w/ PUT THE W IN THE FIRST BOX
/i/ PUT THE I IN THE NEXT BOX
/sh/ PUT THE SH IN THE LAST BOX
WHY DO YOU THINK THE SH GOES IN ONE BOX TOGETHER? RIGHT, BECAUSE
IT MAKES ONE SOUND.
SPELL FISH, OK NOW CLEAR YOUR BOARD
SPELL SHUT
SPELL SHINE (WHY WOULD WE ONLY HAVE THREE BOXES FOR SHINE?
RIGHT , BECAUSE THE E IS SILENT)
SPELL SHIP
Assessment: Observing the student spell the words correctly and the
worksheet
