Hummer's Phoneme Chants
My creative correspondent Melanie

has done it again: She has written and illustrated chants for learning
phoneme awareness. Melanie is a
reading specialist at Green Ridge Elementary School in Mechanicsburg,
Pennsylvania.
The baby cries because he is mad,
“A, a, a”-
Feed him now and he won’t be sad,
“A, a, a”.
It’s so hard for Grandpa to hear,
“E, e, e” -
He puts his hand up by his ear,
“E, e, e”.
This medicine tastes really icky,
“I, i, i”-
And it makes my mouth real sticky,
“I, i, i”.
The doctor told me to open wide,
“O, o, o”-
So he could look deep inside,
“O, o, o”.
When you punch it sounds like this,
“U, u, u”-
Be a friend, don’t use your fists,
“U, u, u”.
Mom saw me sneak a cookie today,
“A, a, a”-
She sent me to my room to stay;
“A, a, a”.
A mouse ran out and scared the man,
“E, e, e”-
The man screamed and away he ran-
“E, e, e”.
I can’t believe what I just did,
“I, i, i”-
My mom is sure to flip her lid-
“I, i, i”.
The party was a big surprise,
“O, o, o”-
The girl could not believe her eyes-
“O, o, o”.
Who remembers the #1 rule?
“U, u, u”-
To do your very best in school?
“U, u, u.”
