Advising in the Psychology Department

All Psychology majors should meet with their Psychology advisor during each semester’s registration period. Although such a meeting is not required, it is highly recommended.

Assignment of majors to specific Psychology advisors is done alphabetically. Flyers with alphabetized assignments are posted in the hallways of the 1st and 2nd floor of Thach Hall the week prior to each registration period.

To determine who is your Psychology advisor, consult these flyers. (As Psychology faculty come and go or take professional leave, the student assignments to Psychology advisors may change.)

All Psychology advisors will have sign up sheets (or other related information) for their advisees posted outside their doors beginning the week prior to each registration period. Please sign up for a time that is convenient to you.

Students are expected to come prepared to their advisor with specific questions. General information, such as the various fields of psychology, is available on the web. Psychology advisors provide information specific to the Psychology major and offer advice on careers in Psychology and career planning. There is excellent career information for Psychology majors on the WWW: One example can be found at http://www.psywww.com/careers/index.htm.

Advising in the College of Liberal Arts

Psychology advisors do not provide information or advice regarding general education (the “core”) requirements, requirements for graduation from Auburn University, or perform credit checks regarding the accuracy of the number of credit hours students have accumulated. This information and other advice is provided by the College of Liberal Arts advisors, located in room 2238 Haley Center. The phone number for this office is: 844-4026 (ask for the Dean’s advisors) and the Web site address is: http://www.cla.auburn.edu/clastudents/advisement/index.htm

After you meet with your Psychology advisor, you will receive a verification form. This form will permit you access to the College of Liberal Arts advisors—the College of Liberal Arts office do not see upper division students unless those students have first met with their departmental (in the case Psychology) advisors.

Be sure to check with the College of Liberal Arts advisors regarding the accuracy of the number of credit hours you may have accumulated toward graduation at least one full semester before you plan on graduating.

All freshmen and first semester sophomores must also visit the College of Liberal Arts advising office during the registration period for general consultation regarding their academic progress.
