Diversity Committee Action Plan 2004-2005
- Preliminary Plan:
Assess the status of the clinical program regarding cultural diversity on a yearly basis- Compile applicant demographic data and post on the department’s diversity web page.
- Review graduate syllabi for diversity topics.
- Compile program diversity information using the AU College of Education’s
Diversity Survey for Faculty, Staff, and Students
- Solicit survey responses from interns
- Solicit survey responses from current students
- Compare our results to the baseline data provided by the AU College of Education Diversity Committee
- Develop a general plan regarding how to effect change in consultation with diversity experts (e.g., Dr. Holly Stadler)

a. Propose to the clinical faculty that one of the Counseling Courses on Diversity [COUN 7330 (Counseling Diverse Populations) or COUN 7960 (Directed Reading: Advanced Studies in Diversity)] be required for the Clinical Psychology Doctoral curriculum. - Invite Renee A. Middleton, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Counseling Psychology, to a clinical faculty meeting to educate the faculty regarding the empirical content of her diversity courses.
- Develop a two semester Ethics/Diversity seminar for upper level students.
- Include all faculty members in the development of the course.
- Request that all clinical faculty members contribute one diversity-focused lecture that is appropriate to their clinical or research interest.
- Include this one credit seminar course as a required course for the Clinical Psychology Doctoral curriculum.
- Conduct a bi-monthly Diversity Seminar Series.
- Post the schedule of events on the diversity web page
- Circulate summary notes from the series to the faculty and students
- Potential speakers to include:
- Lisa Swanzey - Office for Students with Disabilities
- Dr. Becky J. Liddle – GLBT client issues
- Janet Saunders – Sexual Harassment
- Renee Middleton – Diverse clients
- Ginny O’Leary – Women’s issues in Psychology

- Teaching about cultural diversity
- Recruitment and Retention of racial/ethnic minorities
- Recruitment of minority faculty
- Add faculty-related diversity information to the department web page.
- Network at conferences focusing on minority groups of psychologists
- Increase job advertising to special sections/divisions on diversity in professional organizations.
- Retention of minority faculty
- Foster mentor-mentee relationships
- Participation in the AU minority faculty organization
- Recruitment of minority graduate students
- Add student-related diversity information to the department web page (e.g., research topics)
- Advertise department offerings at local job fairs, Black Student Organization meetings, the AU CDRR, and HBCUs.
- Contact Jeff Cassisi about the consortium of universities that will target promising undergraduates of color for mentoring by faculty to prepare and encourage these students to be applying to doctoral-level clinical programs.
- Network at relevant conferences (e.g., American Black Psychology Conference 8/2004).
- Develop a recruitment protocol (including a calendar)
