PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK IN AT THE VOLUNTEER TABLE IN THE HALLWAY INSIDE. GLOVES MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.
The responsibilities of the Instrument Detail volunteers are:
1. to scrub, rinse and dry the instruments in the surgery spay packs
2. to clean the spay boards and return them to the spay prep station
3. to pick up the used scissors from the Physical Exam/ Ear Tip station
and to wash and dry them
4. to pick up the used hemostats from the Medications station and to
wash and dry them
Before the clinic starts, be sure you learn the locations of the following stations:
-Spay Stations (there are 4 Spay Veterinarians and 4 Veterinary Assistants at this station)
-Medications Transport station (there is 1 of these stations)
- Medications station (there are 2 of these stations)
-Physical Exam/Ear tip station (there are 2 of these stations)
-Spay Prep station (there are 2 of these stations)
Each Veterinary Assistant works with a Spay Veterinarian. The veterinarian will use a separate sterile pack of instruments for each cat. Once a spay surgery is complete, the Veterinary Assistant will pass the used instrument pack to the Instrument Detail Volunteer for cleaning. For safety, the veterinarian will dispose of sharps (scalpel blade, suture needle) in a sharps container before the pack is passed for cleaning. The Veterinary Assistant will discard the paper drape, used gauze, gloves and other disposables and pass the dirty instruments pack to the Instrument Detail Volunteer. This should all be done before the pack is passed to you for cleaning.
Clean the instruments by soaking them in water and then scrubbing them using instrument soap. Take care to open them and clean the area in the hinges of each instrument and in the corrugated area of the clamps where blood collects. Next rinse the instruments in water and dry them with towels.
The Medications Transport volunteer will take cats from surgery to the Medications station where they will be removed from plastic trays called "spay boards". You should get these used spay boards, wash and dry them and then return them to the Spay Prep station. Be sure to remove all tape from the spay boards. Do NOT walk through the surgery room, but go down the hall and around to return the spay boards.
You will also need to pick up the used scissors from the Physical Exam/Ear tip station where they will be soaking in blue buckets of soapy water. Clean and dry these and place them in the round plastic basin labeled "Ear Tip Scissors". Be sure to leave the blue bucket at the Physical Exam/Ear tip station each time. Take care to dry the scissors thoroughly so they do not rust and ruin.
Finally, you will need to pick up the used hemostats from the Medications station where they will be soaking in blue buckets of soapy water. Clean and dry these and place them in the round plastic basin labeled "Ear Tip Hemostats". Be sure to leave the blue bucket at the Medications station each time. Take care to dry the hemostats thoroughly so they do not rust and ruin.
Remember, when you are going to and from the various stations collecting instruments, do not cut through the sterile Spay Station area.
At the end of the clinic, clean up your station and dispose of trash. Repack your kit. (See Inventory Sheet included in your kit.) The Veterinary Assistant volunteers will help to put the instrument packs away with their supplies. You should be sure this gets done. It is essential that instruments are not put away wet or bloody because they can rust and ruin. They are VERY EXPENSIVE!! Each set of instruments should be replaced in its respective bowl. Stack the bowls neatly in the laundry basket at the Spay Station Supply Table, including the basins of Ear Tip instruments.
PLEASE LEAVE THIS INSTRUCTION SHEET WITH YOUR KIT AT YOUR STATION AT THE END OF THE DAY. THANK YOU!
