ANESTHESIA TRANSPORTER

PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK IN AT THE VOLUNTEER TABLE IN THE HALLWAY INSIDE. GLOVES MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.

The responsibilities of the Anesthesia Transporters are:
1. to transport cats from the waiting room to the Anesthesia station (The Anesthesia station should begin requesting cats to be anesthetized promptly at 8:45 a.m. or at the direction of the Supervisor.)
2. to monitor the cats in the Induction Station and transport them to the Sex Check/FeLV station when they are anesthetized/immobilized
3. to check cats for previously tipped left ears
4. to handle the laundry baskets as described below

Be sure to speak with the Anesthesia volunteers before the clinic starts and read each others' instruction sheets so you understand your roles working together.

When you arrive at the clinic, obtain a pair of leather gloves from the box on the volunteer check in table labeled Kennel G transport leather gloves. Volunteers will be transporting cats from the holding facility in Kennel G to the waiting room. They will place kittens and obvious females (calicos and tortoiseshells are almost always females) at the front of the line.

When the anesthetists signifies that it is time to begin, wearing the leather gloves, remove the cloth pad from a trap and carry the trap to the Anesthesia station. Put clean pads in a laundry basket. They will be used to cover the cats after the clinic is over when they are transported back to Kennel G. Put wet or soiled pads in a separate laundry basket.

Start with the kittens if there are any, followed by 3 females (calicos and tortoiseshells are almost always females). Next, bring 3 males (tom cats are usually large with broad heads and necks). Thereafter, try to alternate between males and females. The Supervisor will keep in close communication with you to let you know which sex is needed in order to regulate the flow of cats to their respective surgery stations.

The Anesthetist will inject the cat through the bars of the trap. After the injection has been given, place the cat (still in the trap) in the induction area of the Anesthesia station until it is completely anesthetized, at which point you should transport the trap to the Sex Check/FeLV test station. You should monitor the cats in the induction area closely: watch for irregular breathing or vomiting. Notify the Anesthetist or Supervisor if there are problems. As soon as the cat appears anesthetized and immobilized, transport it to the Sex Check/FeLV test station. It is very important not to delay getting the cat to the next station once it is anesthetized since anesthetic time is limited!! A volunteer at that station will remove the cat from the cage after it is adequately anesthetized. TRAPS CONTAINING AN AWAKE OR SEMI-CONSCIOUS CAT SHOULD NEVER BE OPENED.

Continue to bring more cats as necessary for anesthesia. Anesthesia will need a steady supply to ensure efficient flow to subsequent stations. If a cat with a cropped left ear is identified, do not bring it to the Anesthesia station but bring it directly to the Recovery station and notify the Supervisor.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, PLEASE RETURN YOUR GLOVES TO THE BOX ON THE VOLUNTEER CHECK IN TABLE. LEAVE THIS INSTRUCTION SHEET ON THE TABLE AS WELL. THEN, TAKE BOTH LAUNDRY BASKETS (CLEAN AND DIRTY) TO THE RECOVERY AREA AND LEAVE THEM THERE. THANK YOU!
