Goals:

* Establish relevance of the unit topic to contemporary society and students' lives. 

* Engage students in active reading and learning. 

* Evaluate the merits of opposing arguments. 

* Examine strategies for critical thinking--distinguish fact from opinion, examine the authors' motives and 
  qualifications, examine inflammatory language, and weigh the evidence for arguments.

* Discuss literature thoughtfully and critically.

* Develop individual positions on issues of student choice.

* Develop creative means to report their positions.

* Use technology in learning and in creating presentations.

* Explore different types of expository and literary texts.

The learning goals correspond to NCTE Standards numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, and 12.  In addition,  the learning goals correspond to the following Alabama Course of Study -Language Arts standards.  

                   Ninth grade-Numbers 1, 8-9, 11-12, 14-16, 17-19, 31-32, and 34
                   Tenth grade-Numbers 1, 10-11, 13-16, 21-22
                   Eleventh grade-Numbers 1, 5-7, 8-9, 11-12, 15, 20, 22-24, 28-29, 32
                   Twelfth grade-Numbers 1, 8, 11, 14-17, 19, 21, 25, 28
