Problem-Centered Mathematics Units

The Auburn University Mathematics Education Program envisions mathematics teaching and learning which focuses on students as problem solvers.  Unit designs provide students with the opportunity to investigate mathematical ideas, form hypotheses, and draw conclusions.  In addition to problem solving, units focus on encouraging students to communicate mathematically as well as on reasoning mathematically.

While a variety of materials and methods can be employed in any unit, there are some essential features key to all units.

  1. All units are motivated by a problem which captures the students' interests.
  2. Students explore the mathematical content of the motivational problem, often in small groups.
  3. Students work together to draw conclusions about their explorations.  These conclusions are then refined by the teacher.
  4. Connections are made between the mathematical conclusions and the original problem as well as with other problems.
Samples of such units are modeled, practiced, and assessed in undergraduate course work.
