Pre-AP Vertical Team Social Studies

 


Course Description: The Social Studies Vertical Teaming week-long workshop is designed for middle school and high school teachers who teach all academic levels of students who would like to incorporate Pre-AP strategies within their classes.

Course Syllabus: Participants will get instruction of the following strategies and best practices: (Participants are encouraged to bring their textbook(s) for pre-planning)

  • Writing and scoring an essay (thesis, evidence & conclusion)
  • Using Document –Based Questions
  • Using categorization (social, economic, political, etc)
  • Reading in the Content Area strategies
  • Using visual materials effectively
  • Implementing technology within the social studies class (podcasting & blogging)
  • Vocabulary/Identifications strategies that work
  • Webquest of the top 20 Social Studies websites
  • How to create and organize a vertical team
  •  Lesson planning to ease into  the use of Pre-AP Strategies

Constance Hines is in her 23rd year of teaching.  Ms. Hines taught middle school social studies in urban as well as suburban schools.  Currently, Ms. Hines is the Social Studies Department Chairperson at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Pasco County, FL where she teaches AP United States History, US Government and Law Studies.  Ms. Hines is a National Board Certified Teacher and was honored as Broward County, Florida’s Teacher of the Year in 2002.  Ms. Hines conducts one and two day workshops on behalf of the College Board throughout the United States. Ms. Hines has plunged into podcasting and blogging; she’s having a blast by extending learning experiences for her students.
