GEAR UP Alabama
The Center for Educational Outreach and Engagement (CEOE), as a unit of the co-principal investigator’s staff for GEAR UP Alabama (GUA), a federal grant awarded by the United States Department of Education to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, facilitates GUA’s core subject summer academies. These activities will help public school students make progress toward fulfilling their graduation requirements in mathematics and language arts. In partnership with the Youth Programs division in the Office of Professional and Continuing Education, CEOE will lead the development and implementation of summer camps throughout the GUA region. These efforts to increase student exposure to higher education environments connect with the goal of GUA students developing lasting academic relationships to increase the chance for success in post-secondary environments.
In addition, CEOE serves on the steering committee for GUA. Our office’s responsibilities in this capacity are to provide program-level oversight and human resource support. In collaboration with other institutions of higher education as co-principal investigators of GUA, CEOE is a member of the Grant’s executive council.
