Handbook for B.M.E. Students

ALL STUDENTS: CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE TAKING THE CORRECT LEVEL AND SECTION OF APPLIED PEFORMANCE. The correct sequence is: MUAP 1110, MUAP 1220, MUAP 2320, MUAP 2420, MUAP 3120, MUAP 3220, & MUAP 4120 + MUAP 4000.

1. See the Music Education Curriculum Guides for the required order of classes and teacher education requirements. Also follow the Teacher Education Transition Points .

2. For questions regarding Core Curriculum courses, see an adviser in Professional Education Services. Direct other questions to Dr. Walls or Dr. Kuehne.

3. Freshmen should begin their piano class sequence (take MUSI 1020) and also take Orientation to Teacher Education (CTMU 1010) their first semester. If CTMU 1010 conflicts with a required ensemble, take CTMU 1010 in the Spring, but be sure to see your adviser before registering.

4. Freshmen should arrange with a school for summer or winter break pre-teaching. Pre-teaching involves observing a music teacher for 5 days. Any school music teacher except a previous high school teacher. Pre-teaching is required before you apply to Teacher Education next January!

5. All students: Take the Basic Skills Assessment before applying for admission to Teacher Education.

6. Sophomores apply for Teacher Education in HC 3464 at the beginning of Spring Semester and contact Dr. Walls for the date for the upcoming Teacher Education Interview (before midterm Spring semester).

7. Print the Professional Interview Information and Rating Form. Fill out the cover sheet and bring the packet to the interview along with a copy of your resume. The paper you write should address why you think you want to teach music. Dress professionally.

8. Sophomores must either show progress toward piano competency or complete piano competency requirements before registering for CTMU 5940 Elementary Music Methods.

9. Juniors: Students who will have completed CTMU 5940 Elementary Methods and CTMU 5960 Secondary Methods should plan to student teach Spring semester. You must complete the Internship Application and turn in to Dr. Kuehne by midterm the prior Spring.

10. Juniors: The piano competency requirement must be completed before you may register for CTMU 4910 (senior-level course).

11. Rising seniors...Take the PRAXIS II Exam before your final year of school

Note. Rising seniors and interns (those within 30 hours of graduting): You may register for up to 6 hours of graduate -level courses (either on-campus or distance learning) that apply to your master's degree at Auburn and may be transferred to other colleges if you have a 3.0 GPA. See Dr. Walls for information.

If any of this is unclear...please see one of your advisors: Dr. Walls or Dr. Kuehne
