Mentoring/Tutoring

GEAR UP ALABAMA TUTORING PROGRAM

The purpose of the GUA Tutoring Program is to facilitate one-on-one and small group academic tutoring between college students and GUA school participants. Through this program we aim to increase Math, Science, and English/Language Arts achievement for GUA students through individualized assistance. By exposing GUA students to college-age near peers, we want to promote a college-going culture.

Virtual Mentoring

Virtual Mentoring is a new program designed to connect college students with K-12 students to share the college experience. AU students post short (1-2 min) videos of their life into an assigned platform to share with a designated K-12 class. These videos are of everyday experiences in the college student’s lives such as standing in line at Starbucks or going to the library to meet a study group or even a snippet of a class they are attending. After a few weeks there will be several videos for the classrooms to have been able to view. Then 2-3 times per semester, the AU student will connect live with the classroom and the K-12 students for 15-20 min. to answer any questions they have about the college experience they have witnessed through the posted videos.

If you are interested in helping connect with middle and high school students and establishing a relationship that assist them in getting excited about college, please fill out the Volunteer form below. We will then be in touch with more details.
