Course Description:
This workshop is designed for those teaching AP Calculus for the first time and for those seeking refresher training. The class will be examining methodology and content, sharing ideas, developing strategies, and reviewing samples from the 2008 AP Exam reading. The purpose of the workshop is to further acquaint participants with the AP program and its demands, and to continue to serve the needs of the AP student.
Course Syllabus:
This workshop will begin with a complete exploration of the 2009 AP Calculus AB Syllabus. We will spend extra time on topics that typically cause the greatest difficulty for students. Our week will have a bent toward first approaching the calculus problems intuitively and graphically as our emphasis will be on student comprehension rather than computation. We will examine several of the latest reform Calculus texts which will assist us in our teaching with multiple representations – numerically, analytically, graphically and verbally. Our goal will be to make AP Calculus more accessible to more students. Attention will be paid to slope fields and other recent changes. We will use computers as available to visit AP Central and many useful web sites. We will work AP problems from past exams as well as practice grading free response questions by the released rubrics.
All participants are requested to bring a graphing calculator (TI 83/84 preferred), your present calculus text and a flash drive.
