Program Details

The Truman Pierce Institute in conjunction with the Alabama State Department of Education will hold one summer camp for rising Alabama high school students to train them as tutors to work in local 21st Century Community Learning Center (extended-day) Programs. There is no fee associated with the program; all aprticipants will have been selected by TPI to receive a scholarship covering the cost of all instruction, lodging, and meals.

The week long residential camps at Auburn University are designed to:

  • Train high school students as tutors for 21st Century after-school and summer programs
  • Encourage careers in education
  • Provide field experiences in life sciences: fisheries, horticulture, forestry, etc.
  • Provide enrichment activities incorporating nature into literature, art, music, etc.
  • Provide positive experiences on a university campus

The camp will be held at Auburn University the week of June 7-12, 2009. A maximum of 40 students for the camp will be accepted with priority given to rising 11th and 12th grade students.

To apply students must:

  • Complete the registration form
  • Have parental permission
  • Be an Alabama high school student
  • Send a letter of recommendation from a teacher, principal or school official
  • Write an Interest Statement  describing why they should be selected to participate in this innovative summer camp experience at Auburn University 
  • Provide transportation to the Summer Camps
  • Sign an agreement to work in extended-day programs for a minimum of 40 hours either as a volunteer or paid employee.

Daily Schedule will include:

  • Training to work with younger students in extended-day programs
  • Learning strategies for working with students in Reading, Math, Science, Writing, Art, and Special Needs. 
  • Learning techniques for linking nature studies to Literature, Art, Drama, and Music.
  • Environmental study field trips to locations such as:  AU Fisheries, Arboretum, Forestry Preserve, Raptor Center, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Living Streams
  • Evening physical and social activities such as sports, swimming, games, movies, tournaments, etc.
