VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides a secure two-way communication tunnel to the Auburn University network. A VPN connection to the Auburn network requires the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client software, an Auburn account, and 2-factor authentication set up for a second device.

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client available to download through AU Install. The default VPN profile users should select is 2FACTOR.

 

Mobile Instructions

Installing the AnyConnect Client on a mobile device

SETUP 2-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

Register a device for 2-factor authentication if you haven't already done so.

Mobile users can get the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client from the AU Install page or search for it in their respective app store.

The following screenshots were taken on an Android Device. iOS and Windows Mobile devices should be similar.

Install & Configure

  1. Go to AU Install and find the link for Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client or go to your app store, search for the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client, and install it.

  2. Open the app that has been installed so you can configure it.

  3. The first time you open the app, you will be prompted to accept the End User License Agreement. Click OK.

  4. To configure the app, tap Connection.

  5. Next, tap Add New VPN Connection....

  6. Tap Description and insert Auburn VPN. Next, tap Server Address and insert auvpn.auburn.edu.

    Press the Done button to save your settings.

    Tap near the top to get back to the app's home screen.

Open & Connect

  1. Toggle the AnyConnect VPN switch to connect.

  2. A modal pop-up should prompt you to enter your username and password.

    Change the Group if that applies to you. Press the Connect button.

  3. When presented with the Terms & Use Agreement, read and press the Accept button.

Using the AnyConnect Client on a mobile device

  1. Open the app.

Desktop/Laptop Instructions

Installing the AnyConnect Client on a desktop/laptop
  1. Register a device for 2-factor authentication if you haven't already done so.

  2. Visit AU Install, select the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client, and click the link on the right that corresponds to your current operating system: Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, Windows, or Windows Mobile.

    Note: The instructions and images below are for a Windows Desktop installation but other operating systems are similar.
  3. When the download is complete click/double-click the application to begin installing it.

  4. Press the "Next" button.

  5. Read the terms in the License Agreement, select the radio button that means you accept the agreement, and then press the "Next" button.

  6. Press the "Install" button.

  7. Finally, press the "Finish" button.

  8. Once the program is installed, open the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client application and press the "Connect" button.

    Note: Windows users will find it located in the Programs List in a folder called Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.


    New users may need to enter "auvpn.auburn.edu."

  9. When the application has connected to auvpn.auburn.edu it will present a couple of group options for you and fields to authenticate to the AU Network.

    Most users should select 2FACTOR, enter your username & password, and press the "OK" button.

Using the AnyConnect Client on a desktop/laptop
  1. Register a device for 2-factor authentication if you haven't already done so.

  2. Open the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client application and press the "Connect" button.

    Note: Windows users will find it located in the Programs List in a folder called Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.


    New users may need to enter "auvpn.auburn.edu."

    Press Connect

  3. When the application has connected to auvpn.auburn.edu it will present a couple of group options and fields to authenticate to the AU Network.

    Most users should select 2FACTOR, enter their username & password, and press the "OK" button.

    Note: Banner Admin users may select BANNER as the group.
