SPAM: Just Delete It
General Info

Spam is junk e-mail sent in bulk to unsolicited recipients. It includes chain letters, advertisements, get rich quick scams, and pornography. Almost everyone who uses e-mail receives spam.

How OIT fights spam

OIT is committed to combating spam both at the university firewall level (that is, at the edge of the University network) and by providing e-mail software that has specific junk mail handling features. There are also some things you can do both to reduce the number of spam messages you get and to make it easier to deal with the spam you do get.

IronMail is software that runs at the firewall (that is, at the edge of the University network). All messages addressed to @auburn.edu addresses are checked by IronMail. Infected attachments containing viruses are dropped, but the text is not altered.

Messages that IronMail determines are a high probability of being spam (or junk e-mail) are marked with a prefix in the subject line: { SPAM # }. IronMail rankings help individuals decide how they wish to automate handling of spam. The ranking process is fully automated; no person reads anyone else's messages.

Adjusting the spam marking level

If some of your e-mail addresses are being incorrectly marked as spam, you can send a request to the IronMail administrator to request that a specific e-mail address be added to a trusted list of e-mail addresses.

Note: Please attach the entire message, don't just paste it in the body of the e-mail. The system administrator must have the complete header of the message to process your request.

To send a request, email: IronMail System Administrator
