Outlook App for Android/iOS disabled for employee email

Recently, Microsoft released a mobile version of Outlook for Android and iOS. Unfortunately, the app fails to meet security and policy standards that are common to higher education institutions, including Auburn University. Auburn, along with many other universities and companies, have expressed concerns to Microsoft.

The items of concern are specifically:

  • Lack of support for ActiveSync policies
  • App allows the ability to bypass security and encryption rules
  • Lacks the ability to conduct a full device wipe in case of a lost/stolen device
  • Credentials, along with a subset of email, contacts, and calendar information, are cached in an Amazon cloud
This app will be blocked as of February 5, 2015 @ 10:00 a.m.

If you install the app and attempt to connect it to employee email, you will receive an "authorization failed" error message.

Hopefully the tech giant will make the appropriate changes soon, so we can use what appears to be a very promising app. Another post will be made when the security issues have been addressed and the app is unblocked.
