Web could vanish for hordes of people in July, FBI warns

The Internet,R.I.P. July 9th?

On April 21, CNET News released an article, raising awareness of the shocking truth that a virtual Internet doomsday will occur if computer owners don’t take action soon.

Your computer, along with millions of others worldwide, may be infected with DNSChanger. Discovered in 2007, this malware was designed to interfere with DNS servers, and then direct the infected computers to rogue servers, leading them to sites chosen by criminals behind the plan.

Last year, the FBI confiscated the rogue servers, but since so many computers depended on them, the FBI restored the servers and kept them running. However, this has been an expensive task, so the government will shut down the servers in July, at which point all the dependent computers will lose Internet access.

By July 8th, check to see if your computer has been infected, and learn how to remove the DNSChanger at www.dcwg.org.
