What are the rules for changing my password?
The rules for changing your password are as follows:
- Begin with a letter
- Minimum 8 characters, maximum 30 characters
- Minimum "average" strength
- Average = Using a number and UPPERCASE & lowercase letters
How does the password strength meter work?
The password strength meter indicates how strong your password is by switching from
- Very Weak
- Weak
- Average
- Strong
- Very Strong
The strength is determined by a point system. The greater the variation of UPPERCASE letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and allowed special characters ( _ $ # ), the greater the number of points (i.e. a stronger password). For more tips see Selecting a Very Strong Password.
What is an alternate e-mail address?
An alternate e-mail address is any e-mail address you use that is not your official Auburn University e-mail address. If you do not have an alternate e-mail address and would like one, there are many free services that provide these (example: Google's Gmail, MSN's Hotmail, etc.).
If I set up an alternate e-mail address, will it forward all my AU e-mail to that address?
No. MyAccount notifications are sent automatically to your Auburn e-mail address and can also be sent to an alternate e-mail address if you specify one. This feature has nothing to do with your regular AU e-mail messages.
Why should I set up an alternate e-mail address?
If you forget your password and can't retrieve it using MyAccount, the OIT HelpDesk can send a new password to you at your alternate e-mail address. The HelpDesk employee never sees your password - the message to your alternate e-mail address is generated automatically. In addition, you can receive MyAccount notifications at an alternate e-mail address if desired.
Will my alternate e-mail address be published anywhere?
No. The e-mail address you provide will be saved in a secure database and will only be used for MyAccount functions and processes.
What are security questions?
Security questions and your answers to those questions are used to verify your identity if you forget your password. If you click on the Forgot Password? link it will ask you one biographical question and two of the security questions you established. These questions should be ones that only you know the answer to. Note: you can answer anything you like to the questions but remember you will need to be able to recall what you answered. If you answer correctly you can proceed to reset your password.
Can I make up my own security questions?
No. That feature is not available at this time. We hope to implement this ability in a future release.
