Using FTP with WinSCP
Task:
I want to upload my files via FTP to my Auburn account web space by using the program WinSCP.
How to do it:
WinSCP is installed on all of the OIT computing labs and is available for home computer download from AU Software.
FTP Spreads Germs: You can download a file with a computer virus from an FTP site. But, like kissing, that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it; just be careful. If you are FTPing programs, get them from well known, "reliable" sites. If you happen to contract a computer virus on your diskette, use the virus cleaning software available in the labs or call the HelpDesk.
Follow these steps:
- Open the WinSCP program. The Login Dialog window will open
automatically.

- In the Enter host text box, type mallard.auburn.edu.
- In the Enter username and Enter password text boxes,
enter your AU User name and password, then click OK.
Note: If you get a message relating to cacheing, click "OK".
- The Connection Screen is where you transfer your files.

The left side contains the drives, directories, and files on your computer while the right has those of the remote computer that you're logged into.
- To transfer a file, click once to select an item
and then click on an option at the bottom of the screen. Use the folder
followed by two dots, "..", to go back a directory.
Move a file
leaving a copy on the local machine.
Move a file
without leaving a copy.Note: Hold down the CTRL button to select multiple files. Hold down the SHIFT button to highlight all the files between two files that you select. This works in lots of other programs, as well.
Note: If you upload a file with the same name as one already on the remote computer, the remote file be copied over and lost!
Because AU web servers are case sensitive, it's a good idea to use lowercase
names for files to avoid problems. When you receive a copy confirmation
for transferring a file, click More>> and select Change
case to "lower case" and then Use same setting next
time. - To close your FTP session, click on the F10 Exit button or
close WinSCP entirely.
How to check/change file permissions:
On the right side of the window showing the remote computer, highlight
a file and click F9 (Properties) to view and/or change the UNIX file permissions.
