Creating a Web Page in the OIT Computer Labs

Task:

How do I build and create web pages on a campus computer located in an OIT Computing Lab?

How to do it:

Creating a web page from an OIT Computing Lab machine is simple. There are a wide variety of uses for a web page, such as a resume, so be creative! Kind in mind, though, that you are subject to the rules set by the OIT Network Policy.

Follow these steps:

  1. Log into an OIT Computing Lab machine and open My Computer on the desktop.

  2. Select the (P:) drive, which is also your public_html directory on your H: drive.

Note: If you do not have a P: drive, open the H: drive and select File > New > Folder. Name the new folder "public_html" and then log out of the computer. When you log back in, you will have a P: drive.

Note: All files stored in the P: drive are accessible via the Internet!

  3. Open Microsoft Expression Web and select File > New > Web Site.

  4. Choose General > One Page Web Site > click the Browse button > find the P drive > OK > OK.

  5. In the folder list pane on the left, highlight the file named default.htm > right-click > Rename > enter index.htm

  6. Double-click index.htm to open the file. Make changes to the page. Experiment with different features, use the Help button, and if the page gets totally messed up, just close the file without saving and start over. Exercise your creativity!

Note: The www.auburn.edu UNIX Apache (Mallard) server does not use FrontPage Extensions or the .NET Framework, so features that rely on these will not work. Templates, master pages, ASP.NET controls and the database and security features are grayed out in Expression Web in the OIT Computing Labs. Employees and graduate students may prefer to host their web sites on the OIT Windows web server where these features are available. See Hosting Options.

  7. Choose File > Save or simply press Ctrl-S and voila! Your page is now viewable on the web at http://auburn.edu/~username where username is your AU User Name.

  8. Point a web browser to your new personal page and see how it looks to the world. Whenever you save changes, refresh (reload) the browser page to see the changes.

  9. Let your creativity flow. You might begin by writing a description of yourself or posting a picture. It's your page, so have fun with it! Repeat steps 6-8 until you're satisfied.

  10. You may wish to experiment with Templates instead of choosing General to create a more polished site with navigation, images and multiple pages.

Note: Posting your e-mail address on a web page increases your chances of receiving SPAM mail. An alternative is to use a web form that mails data, so that your e-mail address is hidden.
