Formatting a floppy diskette

Task:

I need to completely clear all data off of a floppy diskette because I want to recycle last semester's diskettes.

How to do it:

Use the built-in Windows feature to format a floppy diskette.

Follow these steps:

  1. Put the floppy diskette in your computer.

  2. Open My Computer from the desktop (Windows 98/2000) or the Start Bar (Windows XP).

  3. Highlight the Floppy A: icon by clicking on it once with your mouse. If you'd like to view the contents of the diskette, double-click on the icon.

  4. From the menu bar, select File > Format.

  5. You will need to indicate the capacity of the diskette by looking at the outside cover of the diskette. High Desnsity or HD diskettes are 1.44 MBs and have two square holes while Double Density or DD diskettes are 720 KBs and only have one square hole.
