Disabling print shares

Task:

To disable print shares in Windows operating systems.

How to do it:

Allowing other users to access a printer attached to your computer can also make it possible for unauthorized people to access your computer and damage files or the operating system.  Since Printer sharing represents a computer security threat, we recommend that local printers not be shared and any current Printer shares be disabled.

To disable existing print shares:

  1. Click the Windows Start button and choose "Settings".

  2. Locate and click on the "Printers" folder.

  3. Locate a shared printer. (printer icon with a hand under it)

  4. Right-click on the shared printer icon and choose "Sharing" from the menu that appears.

  5. Click the "Sharing" tab on the Printer Properties dialog box.

  6. Click the radio button labeled "Not Shared" from the Printer Properties dialog box to disable printer sharing for this printer.

  7. Click the "Apply" button to save your changes and click the "OK" button to close the dialog box.
