Disabling file shares

Task:

To disable file shares in Windows operating systems.

How to do it:

Allowing other users to access a folder on your computer in order to share files can make it easy for unauthorized people to access your computer and damage files or the operating system.  Since file sharing represents a computer security threat, we recommend that new file shares not be set up and current file shares be disabled.

To disable existing file shares:

  1. Right click on a shared folder (folder icon with a hand under it).

  2. Choose "Sharing" from the menu that appears

  3. Click the "Sharing" tab from the window that appears.

  4. Click the radio button labed "Do not share this folder".

  5. Click the "Apply" button to save your changes and click "OK" to close the window.
