Desktop Cleanup Wizard

Task:

My computer desktop has become cluttered with shortcuts and icons. Is there an easy way to clean it up?

How to do it:

The Desktop Cleanup Wizard helps you clean up your desktop by moving rarely used shortcuts to a desktop folder called Unused Desktop Shortcuts.

Follow these steps:

  1. Right-click anywhere on the computer desktop with all programs closed or minimized.

  2. Point to Arrange Icons By.

  3. Click Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard.

  4. Click Next on the window that opens to display the "Shortcuts" Page.

  5. Make sure there is a check in only the boxes for the items you no longer wish to have on your desktop. These items will not be deleted, but instead placed in a folder on the desktop titled "Unused Desktop Shortcuts".

  6. Click Finish.

If you would like to restore any of the icons:

  1. Open the folder on your desktop called "Unused Desktop Shortcuts".

  2. In the File and Folder Tasks menu in the upper left-hand corner, click Move this file.

  3. When the Move Items dialog box opens, select the appropriate destination for the files you wish to move, most likely the "Desktop".

  4. Click on Move.
