Basic Student Telephone Service
A telephone line with basic services will be provided upon a resident's request for a monthly rate of $23.32 which includes state sales tax. Basic phone service features are:
- customer-originated trace
- unlimited local usage
- caller ID
- call waiting
- last number redial
Customer Originated Trace (COT)
This is a feature to be used in cases of malicious phone calls. COT allows you to activate an immediate trace of the last incoming call. Just hang up, lift the headset and dial *57. A report is generated by the telephone system documenting the date/time and incoming caller id information. When you report the malicious call to the Auburn Department of Public Safety (501-3100), they can contact Telecom to obtain the report on the call. Telecom will not provide the COT report to individuals, only the Department of Public Safety.
Caller ID
To enjoy caller ID, you simply need to buy a display phone or display add-on unit that works with your existing phone. When the phone rings, the callers number appears on the display.
Note: Callers can block their telephone number from being displayed by dialing * 67 before each call.
Last number redial - to activate, press ##.
Telecom provides a personal authorization code (auth code) to each student for direct dial long
distance calls. Students can use personal calling cards or call collect, but 1+ direct dial calls from
their room can only be made with the University authorization code. The code will only work from the
student's residence phone. Long Distance Service will be billed individually to each student sharing Basic
Telephone Service. Domestic charges are a flat rate of $ 0.05 per
minute.
International Rates are listed separately. All answered calls
are billed; minimum time thresholds do not apply. A 6.0% Alabama Gross Receipts Tax will be applied to all
Long Distance Charges.
Sharing an authorization code is prohibited. Students are responsible for all charges made with their personal authorization code. If your code is lost or stolen, you must notify the OIT HelpDesk (844-4944). The code will be deactivated and a new one issued. You will be responsible for all calls made prior to your notification.
Collect calls and third-party calls are not allowed on the University Telephone system.
Telecom charges are billed on your Bursar account. A link is provided on your online Bursar account that
allows you to view the monthly charges, long distance usage and taxes that total the line entry indicated
on your billing.
Billing disputes must be brought to Telecom's attention within sixty days of date of charge. Call
the OIT HelpDesk, (334-844-4944) for assistance. We will NOT make adjustments after that time except under
unusual circumstances.
Telecom services may be added, disconnected or transferred online. Failure to inform the office of changes
holds you liable for any charges that may result due to non-compliance. Housing does not notify Telecom
when students move to other on-campus or off-campus locations.
What to do if when you move away from your dorm:
You MUST disconnect your service(s) in order to avoid future charges.
Log in to activate, transfer or disconnect services
Failure to make payment towards your Bursar billing by the due date will result in:
- Suspension of Long Distance Privileges
- Suspension of Telephone Service
Bursar account balance must be brought current before suspended services are restored.
All suspended services will be re-activated at your request. For your convenience, this procedure can be completed online.
Log
in to activate, transfer or disconnect services.
Fraudulent use of the phone system by anyone will not be tolerated. Fraudulent calls will be
traced, abusers will be identified, and they will be turned over to the proper authorities for
disciplinary action.
Harassment Calls
Report all harassment calls to Auburn Department of Public Safety (334-501-3100). Any follow-up investigation by Telecom will be done at the request of the Auburn Department of Public Safety.
Description and Cost
AU voice mail answers your calls when you are busy or away from your phone. The caller is given the
opportunity to leave a voice message which you may later retrieve from any touch-tone telephone by
calling 844-1000 and entering your mailbox ID. The cost is $5.00 per
month for each phone line. Roommates with a single phone line must share the same voice mailbox since only one mailbox is
allowed for each telephone. Also, Call Waiting does not work with telephones that have AU voice
mail.
Features and recommendations
Your voice mailbox is assigned to your campus telephone number and can be personalized with your own voice recordings. We recommend that you make the following recordings so callers will know that they've reached the right person before they leave a message:
- Personal Verification - a voice recording of you and your roommates saying your names.
- Internal or External Greeting - voice recording telling the caller that they can leave a message after the beep.
Note: You may record both an internal greeting and an external greeting. On-campus callers will hear your internal greeting while callers from off-campus will hear your external greeting. If you record just the external greeting, it will be played for all calls.
If you receive a call while you are using the phone, then the caller will automatically hear your Personal Verification recording along with a system announcement that you are on the phone. Call Waiting tones are disabled. Your Greeting will then play before the caller is allowed to leave a message.
If you receive a call while you are away from your phone, after three rings the caller will hear your Greeting recording before they are allowed to leave a message.
If you have a new voice mail message waiting in your mailbox, you will be notified by a stutter dial tone when you lift your telephone handset.
When you are away from your phone for an extended period of time, please check your mailbox frequently to prevent it from becoming full. Mailboxes maintaining excessive read & unread message recordings are subject to be disconnected.

Voice Mail Limits
Your mailbox is considered full when the incoming message recordings exceed 3 minutes total. Read
messages remain for seven days before being automatically deleted. Unread messages are not deleted
automatically by the system. Please delete all messages as soon as possible. The length of each individual
message left in your mailbox is restricted to 60 seconds each, so you may wish to advise callers
to be brief.
