Configure a New Dial-up Connection
How to do it:
You can connect to AU Dial after configuring your modem and setting up a dial-up connection.
Follow these steps:
To install and configure your computer for dial-up networking and AU Dial, scroll below to the appropriate instructions for your operating system.
Note: The long distance number has a charge of $0.05 per minute that is billed to your department.
Windows XP instructions
- If your modem is not installed, Windows XP will automatically detect your modem on start up. If your modem is a new install and has not been configured, use the installation CD that came with the hardware or contact the OIT HelpDesk (334) 844-4944, helpdesk@auburn.edu).
- If your modem is installed, click Start > My Network Places > View network connections
- Click Create new connection to open the "New Connection Wizard".
- Click Next, select Connect to the Internet, and click Next again.
- Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
- Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
- Type in "AU Dial" for the ISP Name and click Next.
- Enter (334) 844-2323 for local access or (877) 534-9981 for long distance and click Next.
- Select which users on your computer will have access to AU Dial and click Next.
- Enter your AU User Name and password for the account User Name and password. Check or uncheck the other options as you desire and click Next.
- Check Add a shortcut to my desktop and click Finish.
- To edit the connection you just created, right click on the AU Dial icon and select Properties.
- Click the Networking tab. The dial-up server type is PPP, Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000, Internet.
- Adjust other settings as needed and then click OK until you return to the "Network Connections" folder.
Windows 2000 instructions/p>
- Double-click on My Computer and then Dial-up Networking.
- A window titled "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" will appear. Click Install.
- If your modem is installed, a window titled "Make New Connection" will appear. Skip to step 9.
- If you do not have a modem installed, a window asking if you want to invoke the modem installer will appear. Click Yes, and follow the instructions in the "Install New Modem" windows to install your modem.
- From the "Add RAS Device" window, choose your modem and click OK.
- On the "Remote Access Setup" window, click on Configure and select Dial-Out Only. Click OK.
- Click Network and make sure only TCP/IP is checked. If it is, then click OK, then Continue. If TCP/IP isn't checked, check it, removing the check in any other boxes by clicking on them.
- When the process is completed, click Restart.
- Once your modem is installed and you have the "Make New Connection" windows open, type "AU Dial" for the "Name the new phone book entry or Connection box" box. Select the checkboxes that apply.
- Select the modem or adapter you will use to connect to AU Dial and click Next.
- Click the country code, if applicable, and then type the area code and enter (334) 844-2323 for local access or (877) 534-9981 for long distance. Click Next and then Finish.
- To edit the connection you just created, click More, and then click Edit entry and modem properties. Click the Server tab.
- The dial-up server type is PPP, Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet. Be sure that TCP/IP is checked, and then click on TCP/IP Settings.
- Select Server Assigned IP Address and Server Assigned Name Server Addresses and then click OK until you return the "Dial-up Networking" folder.
Windows 95/98 instructions
- Double-click on My Computer and then Dial-up Networking.
- A window titled "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" will appear. Click Next.
- If your modem is installed, a window titled "Make New Connection" will appear. Skip to step 7.
- If your modem is not installed, Windows will try to detect one. Click Next and follow the instructions to install your modem.
- If Windows can not install your modem, you will have to install it yourself. You may want to contact the OIT HelpDesk for assistance (4-5555, helpdesk@auburn.edu). Select your modem manufacturer and model from the lists or if you have an installation disk from the manufacturer, insert it now and press Have Disk.
- Select Com Port 1 if it is available and click Finish.
- Once your modem is installed and you have the "Make New Connection" window open, type "AU Dial" in the blank labeled "Type a name for the computer you are dialing".
- Select the modem or adapter you will use to connect to AU Dial. Click Next.
- Click the country code, if applicable, and then type the area code and enter (334) 844- 2323 for local access or (877) 534-9981 for long distance. Click Nex and then Finish.
- To edit the connection you just created, highlight the AU Dial icon and click File Menu > Properties > Server Type.
- The dial-up server type is PPP, Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet. Be sure that TCP/IP is checked, and then click on TCP/IP Settings.
- Select Server Assigned IP Address and Server Assigned Name Server Addresses and then click OK until you return the "Dial-up Networking" folder.
