Students have privacy rights which entitle them to restrict certain personal information to be visible to the public, professors, administrators, etc.

Types of student information
Almost all student information is confidential, and it is the responsibility of the administrative staff to protect information that a student has asked not to be released. AU's internal policies regarding the release of student information supports compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
Unless a student makes a request for it to be restricted, the following information may be released:
- Directory Information - including the student's complete name, local address and phone number, parent/spouse's name and phone number, mailing (permanent) address, classification, and the address of your personal web page.
- E-mail Address
- Photos, video, or other electronic images
- Participation in recognized activities and sports, weight and height for members of athletic teams.
- Dates of attendance at Auburn University, degrees and awards received, and most recent previous educational agency or institution attended.
All other student information not listed above is confidential and may not be released without explicit student permission.
Not all of the above information will necessarily be released, but these are the items that are not automatically protected from release by default restriction. Different information items are released to different sources for different purposes. Photos are not displayed on the web directory, for example, and telephone listings publish different personal information about students than athletic press releases do.
University directory on the Web
The University Directory displays your full name, local address and phone number, e-mail address, user class (level and curriculum), and a link to your web page (if you have one), unless you request otherwise.
Telephone listings
In addition, your local and permanent addresses, local telephone number and user class (level and Program of Study) will be printed in the telephone book and the Foy Union listings unless you request otherwise.
