Terri Williams-Flournoy

Head coach of the women's basketball team

Terri Williams-Flournoy was named the head coach of the Auburn women's basketball team on April 2. A Hampton, Va., native, Williams-Flournoy graduated from Penn State in 1991 with a degree in business management and was a four-year letterwinner for the Lady Lions before beginning her coaching career. The 20-year coaching veteran spent her last eight seasons as the head coach at Georgetown and led the Hoyas to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2010-12. She is now the sixth women's basketball head coach in Auburn's history. Williams-Flournoy and her husband, Eric, have a daughter, Maya, 11, and a son, Eric Jr., 8.

1. What is the philosophy of your program?

Our program is based on family, academics and basketball. It is important to me to surround myself with people of great character, enthusiasm, strong work ethic and pride. I have established a staff with those qualities and we recruit those types of players that will fit into our program. Academically, I want our young ladies to be successful in the classroom first and foremost; a lot of the work ethic applied in the classroom carries over to the court. Obviously, we want to win championships here, and if we recruit players with the qualities we are looking for, we will put ourselves in a great position to be successful in the classroom and on the floor.

2. What drew you into coaching after being a player for so long?

As a player growing up, I developed a very strong sense of competitiveness. I set out to not only compete, but to win in every competitive situation I was exposed to. That competitiveness carried over into my coaching career. Once I got a taste of success as a coach, I wanted to be successful at it - highly successful. My competitive nature is one of the most important qualities I have as a coach. It is my responsibility to instill that competitiveness in my young ladies so they can be successful as players.

3. Are your children involved with basketball or other activities?

My children are 'typical' for their gender. My daughter Maya loves all things feminine. She's very trendy with her attire and loves to dance. She also loves to spend time with her girlfriends and is extremely artistic. My son EJ is your classic boy. He loves to be active, plays hard all the time and likes to be physical. Although he does truly enjoy basketball, he loves all types of sports.

4. What do you and your family enjoy in your spare time?

I don't have much spare time, other than in the months of May and June because our season is so long and when we aren't in season, we are on the road recruiting, trying to find the best players to join our Auburn family. When we do have spare time, we like to be home as a family. Sometimes we will all pile up on the couch and just enjoy each other's company, whether it is watching a movie or some type of sporting event. Of course, Maya is always up for a good day of shopping and EJ loves to play on the Wii.

5. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

My family always spends Christmas at our house. Regardless of where we live and everyone's busy schedule, we all gather at my house to celebrate the holidays with each other, even if it is for a short amount of time. Hopefully we have home games scheduled so that my family can catch a game while they are visiting.
