2011 Television Commercial

'This Is Auburn.'

Auburn student creates 2011 'This is Auburn' NCAA spot concept

Most people know the National Collegiate Athletic Association provides universities the opportunity to air television spots at no cost during televised games. Although the air time is free, however, the complexity, amount of time involved, and professional talent needed for a typical production frequently requires external expertise, and costs for a single spot are often extensive.

In its ongoing effort to reduce expenses, particularly during such tough economic times, Auburn has been producing its spots internally for several years, at very little cost, with our own students and alumni – not paid professionals – donating their time.  Wanting to continue the significant savings and give the Auburn Family a chance to participate, this year we sponsored two "Create Your Own Auburn TV Spot" contests.  We didn't know if one of them would become the NCAA spot, but we did know – based on the hundreds of ideas that poured in for the War Eagle Moment spots a few years ago – that the response would be enthusiastic.

One contest was announced via social media and was open to all, and the other, for students only, was sponsored by the president's office.  An alumnus – Robert Clay  -- won the Facebook contest, winning an Auburn Spirit merchandise package and an appearance on the stadium Jumbotron for his "Love It" concept.  "This is Auburn," a concept by student Brock Hanson, took first place in the student-only contest, earning Brock a scholarship.

Seeing the opportunity to showcase how talented our students are for our alumni – who take great pride in the accomplishments of Auburn students – and others via a national television audience, we asked Brock if he wanted his concept adapted as this year's NCAA spot.  He agreed, and participated in production this summer with the Office of Communications and Marketing. Scenes were re-shot to incorporate a broader base of students, faculty, and staff, and include more beloved Auburn traditions. But, the energetic, fast-paced "This is Auburn" core concept and many of the original locations selected by Brock – including the footage of the Toomer's Corner national championship celebration he shot with his own camera – remain.

Senior Ryan Alcaino placed second and earned a scholarship in the student contest with his concept "Past and Present," proving once again how talented and creative Auburn students are.

Congratulations to Brock, our other talented students and alumni participants, and thanks to the many who donated their time. This type of enthusiasm and love of your university…well…This is Auburn!

War Eagle!
