Dear Members of the Auburn Community:
I wanted to inform you that
an Auburn University student has been hospitalized since November 30 in
Birmingham with a confirmed case of meningococcal meningitis. The student, whose
name is not being released at the request of his parents, is responding well to
treatment, his mother reports.
Because of this incident, 20 AU students
were examined December 3 at the AU Medical Clinic. While none of these students
exhibited any symptoms of the disease, seven students were prescribed
antibiotics as a precautionary measure.
Dr. Frederick Kam, director of
Auburn's Medical Center, and the State Health Department, are recommending that
people see their physician if they have had close physical contact with anyone
diagnosed with meningitis.
Meningococcal meningitis is an inflammation
of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include fever, severe
headache, stiff neck, vomiting, nausea, rash and lethargy.
While the
risk for contracting the bacterial form of meningitis is low, anyone
experiencing the symptoms should see a physician immediately.
