Because there is understandable concern on campus about incoming mail
and the possibility of contamination from biological agents, we offer
the following information.  The best protection against contamination
is
common sense and vigilance.  According to the FBI, you should look for
the following warning signs:  The letter or package has misspelled
words, is addressed to a job title only, is badly typed or sloppily
written, has cutout letters used for the address, is lopsided or
uneven,
is bulky or rigid, has a strange odor, contains a wrong title with the
addressee's name, has oily stains, discoloration or crystallization on
the wrapper or excessive tape or string.  Needless to say, if you
receive such an envelope or parcel, don't open it.  Call the AU Police
Department at 844-4158.  If you want more information about anthrax,
Professor Gary Mullen of the Department of Entomology and Plant
Pathology has directed us to a website maintained by the Centers for
Disease Control which can be accessed at:
