Urgent Message to AU Family

Dear Members of the Auburn University Family:

The news reports from New York and other major cities of the U.S. this
morning are shocking and difficult to comprehend. As the tragedies
unfold, we must be concerned with their impacts on us as individuals, as
family members and as natives of many nations.

My staff and I are devoting full attention to the events of this day
and the steps that we should be taking.  Our administrative decision is
to continue classes but with compassion, understanding and assistance
for individuals who may need to miss their academic work to tend to more
pressing needs.

Our Counseling Services professionals are available to help. I
encourage you to follow the academic model today: Gather information,
sort it carefully, discuss it with others whose views you respect, and
make informed judgments. This is a university of ideas, of
understanding, of respect for others as individuals with their own
beliefs.

The Auburn Creed teaches us to believe in obedience to law and in human
touch "which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual
helpfulness...." You will always remember where you were as these
horrible events unfolded. You will also remember how you responded, as
responsible adults with respect for others. Please be assured that as
developments warrant I will communicate further with you on these
matters.
