Sexual Assault Awareness Week

	In response to the reports of three recent sexual assaults on
the Auburn University campus, the President's Office, the Division of
Student Affairs, Safe Harbor Women's Center, and University Relations
have combined efforts to sponsor a four-day educational and informative
program. The Sexual Assault Awareness Week activities will begin on
September 4th and will culminate on September 7th.   The safety of
University students, faculty and staff is a priority with this
administration.  This program will provide critical information
regarding sexual assault and the consequence of such actions, but most
importantly, it will provide the knowledge of how to help eliminate the
threat of such assaults.  I believe that each of us must become
personally responsible to create a safe environment.  

	I strongly encourage each of you to participate in the daily
events of this program to educate yourself and others regarding the
issues surrounding sexual assault. "Shattered Trust: Rape on College
Campuses" Panel Discussion, will take place on September 5th at 7:00
p.m. in the Student Activities Center.  Dr. Barry Burkhart, AU professor
and national expert on rape, will lead a seminar from 11:30-1:00 p.m. on
Thursday, September 6th.  A self-defense demonstration for women only,
"Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)", will take place at 6:00 p.m., September
6th, in the Library Computer Systems classroom.   

	Providing a safe educational environment is a responsibility
that requires the cooperation and assistance of every Auburn University
student and employee. I am asking that each of you plan to attend the
activities beginning with the Presidential Proclamation on Samford Hall
Lawn at 10:45 a.m. on September 4th.
