60th Republic Day Celebrations

ISA and East Alabama held its annual event to recognize the 60th Republic Day, which marks India's adoption of a constitution and independence. The Indian community celebrated the day with food, music and cultural events organized at the Foy Ballroom.

Chief Guest Dick Phelan, Auburn City Council, commenced the celebration and commented on the historical importance of the day. "We live in a very diverse community here in Auburn, and the Indian culture makes a hufe contribution to it", Phelan said. The event celebrated the history and achievements of India since it became an independent country from the British in 1950. "India is a young country that has impacted the rest of the world in areas such as education, science and technology. For the past two decades, we have made amazing progress as a country", said Hiren. The event also featured a flag hoisting ceremony accompanied by several patriotic songs, as well as a cultural show that showcased the transformation of fashion throughout the different regions of India. Students and children modelled traditional and modern attire, each representing a different state of the country.

Nejla Orgen, director of International student life said the fashion show was a great way to express the diversity found in the Indian Culture. " We love our democracy and it is so exciting that the community can come together to experience the trueness of India." Orgen said. Guests were also served with traditional Indian snacks towards the end of the ceremony.
