Candlelight vigil for 26/11 Mumbai Victims

About 80 Auburn University students & Indian family members, gathered at Cater Hall Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil to remember the 179 people killed in Mumbai, India during the past week. Sunel Merchant, an Indian and a survivor of the 9/11 attacks in New York City, said the attacks hit too close to home. “I could actually feel what was going on in the people’s minds,” said Merchant, owner of the Philly Connection in Auburn. Sushil Bhavnani, a professor in the College of Mechanical Engineering at AU and an Indian, said he had relatives one block from the Jewish Center targeted in the attacks. “Every lost life represents a family for whom things will never be normal again,” he said.

ISA President, Hiren Adesara said, the only thing he did the week of Thanksgiving was watch the news. He and others at the vigil harbored no ill will towards Pakistan, despite speculations that the terrorists may have come from the country. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re from India or Pakistan, we’re all brothers and sisters,” he said. He condemned the attacks, saying that no matter what part of the world the carnage takes place, it affects all humanity. “We are sick of it,” he said. “We all trust in God.”
