DesignWorkshop 2007
June 17-22, 2007

Auburn Industrial Design's DesignWorkshop is a unique program for creative young men and women who are interested in a professional career in design.

The DesignWorkshop is an intensive and exciting, week-long program that begins with basic design training and quickly progresses through advanced Industrial Design concepts. Each day is filled with practical, hands-on design activities, technical demonstrations, and in-depth instruction. Participants will work in dedicated studio spaces throughout the week, with access to photo, computer, wood, and plastic fabrication labs.

DesignWorkshop participants live in air-conditioned residence halls on the Auburn University campus and dine in campus cafeterias. In addition to their time in studio, students will enjoy campus life and participate in social and recreational activities.

About Industrial Design

"Industrial design (ID) is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer." (Industrial Designers Society of America, www.idsa.org)

Industrial Designers look for innovative ways to do things. It's about problem solving, asking “what's really needed, and what's the best way to get it done?” rather than, “Let’s make another 'widget'.” Industrial Designers explore alternatives through drawings and models, refining designs as they are tested with regard to the user’s needs and manufacturer’s capabilities.

The Faculty

The DesignWorkshop will be conducted by faculty, staff, and select students from the Department of Industrial Design. These are leaders who have been recognized for their desire to work with young people as they share their knowledge of design.

Participating faculty members hold degrees in a variety of disciplines including: Industrial Design, Environmental Design, Graphic Design, Architecture, Business and Community Planning, ensuring that students experience a broad perspective of design.
