DesignWorkshop 2009 (June 7-12, 2009)

For nearly fifteen years, the Department of Industrial and Graphic Design at Auburn University has offered its DesignWorkshop, an engaging program for creative young men and women interested in exploring a professional career in Design. The DesignWorkshop is week-long resident program that offers an intesive design experience that begins with fundamental studio training and quickly progresses towards the application of more advanced concepts and methods.

Each day focuses on practical, hands-on design sessions providing technical demonstrations, and in-depth instruction. Participants work in dedicated studio spaces throughout the week, with access to photo, computer, and prototype fabrication labs.

DesignWorkshop participants live in air-conditioned residence halls on the Auburn University campus and dine in campus cafeterias. In addition to their time in studio, students will enjoy campus life and participate in social and recreational activities.

About Industrial Design

"Industrial design (ID) is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer."
(Industrial Designers Society of America - www.idsa.org)

Industrial Designers look for innovative ways to do things. It's about problem solving, asking “what's really needed, and what's the best way to get it done?” rather than, “Let’s make another 'widget'.” Industrial Designers explore alternatives through drawings and models, refining designs as they are tested with regard to user needs and manufacturing capabilities.

The Faculty

The DesignWorkshop is conducted by experienced faculty, and staff, aided by select students from within the Department of Industrial and Graphic Design. Throughout the week, individual attention and guidance is provided for each student as they develop personalized solutions for real world issues.

Participating faculty members hold degrees in a variety of disciplines including: Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Urban Planning, Architecture, and Business, ensuring that students receive a rich perspective on Design and its potential.
